Remotely Sharing Drives in Win2K

I've often used the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit's Rmtshare utility in batch files to remotely share drives on computers on my network. However, Rmtshare doesn't appear in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit. Has this utility disappeared?

True, the Win2K resource kits don't include Rmtshare. But the NT 4.0 version works with Win2K systems. The code in Listing 1 shows the syntax for using Rmtshare to accomplish your task.

You can also use a GUI-based method (similar to NT Server Manager's Computer, Shared Directories option but with more capabilities). The following steps create a share on a remote system (assuming that you have the necessary rights to share resources on the target system).

1. Run the Computer Management console (either right-click My Computer and select Manage, or select Administrative Tools, Computer Management).
2. Right-click Computer Management (Local), click Connect to another computer, then type the name of the computer on which you want to create a share and click OK.
3. In the Computer Management window, navigate to and open System Tools, Shared Folders.
4. Right-click Shares, then select New File Share to launch the Create Shared Folder wizard.
5. In the Folder to share text box, browse to an existing folder or enter a new name to create a new folder. For example, to create a folder named Myshare on the target computer's C drive, type

c:\myshare

In the Share name text box, enter the desired share name for the folder. In the Share description text box, you can type a description for the share (the description is optional).


6. Continue with the wizard. When prompted, set the appropriate permissions on the share.
