SUMMARY

The Compatibility Administration Tool is a part of the Application Compatibility Toolkit, which provides an interface for working with the compatibility data and features on Windows XP-based computers. This article describes how you can use the Compatibility Administration Tool in Windows XP.

Using The Compatibility Administration Tool

When you use the Compatibility Administration Tool, you can turn on and off any of the internal system fixes, browse for fixed programs on system drives, and create multiple fix packages that can be propagated and installed on other computers to resolve compatibility issues.

To create a new Application Fix database:
  1. Click Start , click All Programs , and then click Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.0 .


  2. Click CompatAdmin , and then click New .


  3. Name your custom database, and then click OK . The new database is saved in %SystemRoot%\Windows\AppPatch.


To create a new Application Fix:
  1. Click Start , click All Programs , and then click Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.0 .


  2. Click CompatAdmin , and then click Database .


  3. Click Create Application Fix , and then click either of the following options:


    • Apply Compatibility Mode (A)

      -or-


    • Apply Specific Compatibility Fix (B)


  4. If you clicked Apply Compatibility Mode (A) , follow these steps (if you clicked Apply Specific Compatibility Fix (B) , go to step five):


    1. Click Next , enter the name of the program to create a compatibility layer, and then click Next .


    2. Click Browse , locate the .exe file of the program that you want to fix.


    3. Click Open , click Compatibility Mode to apply the following settings, and then click Next :

      • 256 Color
      • 640x480
      • Disable Themes
      • International
      • LUA
      • LUACleanup
      • NT4SP5
      • ProfilesSetup
      • Win2000
      • Win95
      • Win98


    4. Click Add File to add any files that you know are related to the program.


    5. Click AutoGenerate to get a listing of any files that are used when the program is run.


    6. Click Test Run , and then click Go .


    7. If you do not experience any issues, click Finish .


  5. If you clicked Apply Specific Compatibility Fix (B) , follow these steps:


    1. Click Next , enter the name of the program to create a compatibility layer, and then click Next .


    2. Click Browse , locate the .exe file of the program that you want to fix.


    3. Click Open , and then click the fixes that you want to apply.


    4. Click Add File to add any files that you know are related to the program.


    5. Click AutoGenerate to get a listing of any files that are used when the program is run.


    6. Click Test Run , and then click Go .


    7. If you do not experience any issues, click Finish .


To disable an Application Fix:
  1. Click Start , click All Programs , and then click Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.0 .


  2. Click CompatAdmin , and then under Microsoft Application Database , click the program that you want to disable the application fixes for.


  3. In the right pane, right-click the .exe file for the program, and then click Disable Entry .


The following procedure describes how to disable an Application Fix for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000:
  1. Click Start , click All Programs , and then click Application Compatibility Toolkit 2.0 .


  2. Click CompatAdmin , and then under Microsoft Application Database , click Flight Simulator 2000 .


  3. In the right pane, right-click Fs2000.exe , and then click Disable Entry .
